Traffic Calming Measures for Manor Way, Ruislip

We the undersigned petition Hillingdon Council to introduce traffic calming measures along the entirety of Manor Way, Ruislip. These can include one or more of: a speed limit of 20 mph; regular signage reminding drivers of the reduced speed limit; speed bumps at regular intervals; any other proven traffic calming measures.

Manor way is a narrow and densely populated road that connects Windmill Hill and Ruislip Manor at one end, with Midcroft / Ruislip High Street and Eastcote Road / North Ruislip at the other ends. It is therefore regarded as a 'shortcut' for many drivers avoiding the busier Pembroke Road and Ruislip High Street, particularly during peak hours. The narrowness of the road is made worse by its strategic location between Ruislip Manor and Ruislip underground stations and the availability of free on-street parking, which results in densely parked cars on both sides of the road especially on weekdays.

The above factors contribute to unbearable traffic flows through this residential conservation area, with cars regularly travelling over the 30 mph speed limit (up to 50 mph has been recorded by residents on numerous occasions) through the narrow stretches of road which rarely exceed space for one car at a time. Unsurprisingly, the layout of the road appears to invite drivers to actually speed up rather than slow down with cars often heard rapidly accelerating at precisely the moments when they should be taking much more care.

The safety of residents is further compromised by the fact that Manor Way has transformed over the past decade into a road that predominantly houses families with young children. With two significant turns in the road where drivers are unable to see immediately ahead of them, and the dense parking on both sides of the road, we are afraid it is only a matter of time before a serious or fatal collision occurs. This is combined with traffic building up in some of the narrower stretches at peak times, creating unacceptable levels of local pollution which is particularly damaging to children.

Indeed, publicly available data from crashmap.co.uk shows that in the last 5 years there have been 12 reported incidents across the full length of Manor Way and the immediately adjoining Midcroft, 1 of which was serious with 2 casualties. Every incident is unacceptable regardless of severity, but this only serves to demonstrate the high likelihood of a fresh one occurring very soon.

On the basis of all of the above, we invite all in Hillingdon borough who care about the safety of their community, and particularly those who live the day-to-day challenges of speeding traffic on Manor Way, to support this petition and help us to introduce long overdue traffic calming measures to control this worsening problem.

On reaching 20 signatures it will be formally considered by the Council and relevant Cabinet Member. Local ward Councillors will also be made aware of the petition. The Council's Democratic Services Team will keep the lead petitioner updated on progress.
